This PhD scholarship supports a student passionate about developing novel therapeutics for brain diseases such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. The project focuses on understanding how the brain vasculature—particularly the blood-brain barrier—is disrupted in these conditions, how such dysfunction impairs drug delivery, and whether restoring vascular integrity can improve outcomes. This research is part of an NHMRC-funded Investigator Grant and offers excellent training in experimental techniques, data analysis, and translational research. The successful candidate will gain in-depth expertise in both cardiovascular and neurological diseases, preparing them for a career in academic, clinical, or industry-based biomedical research.
This scholarship provides a living stipend of $37,500 p.a. pro rata indexed, based on full-time studies. The duration of the award shall be three years with a possible extension of up to six months (maximum), assessed on a case-by-case basis. In addition, this scholarship will include a tuition fee offset support for a successful international candidate upon the approval of Curtin University.
The successful candidate must meet the minimum academic entry requirement for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy program (https://www.curtin.edu.au/study/offering/course-rs-doctor-of-philosophy---medicine--dr-gmed/?
Candidates should hold a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in biomedical science or a related field. Applicants with prior research experience and/or publications in areas such as cell biology, immunology, vascular biology, neurology, or bioinformatics are strongly encouraged to apply. Students with a clinical medicine (MD) background are also welcome to apply.
