Methods to improve bone healing and spinal fusion through optimization of autologous bone graft preparation, and optimization of processing variables for allograft-based bone grafts. Will include benchtop studies, development of in vitro assays, and correlative in vivo models of bone formation. Expect interaction with spine and orthopaedic surgeons, as well as industry partners. The PhD program is expected to include visiting SeaSpine in California, USA to gain experience with medical device engineering and marketing teams. SeaSpine is a leading global medical device company focused on improving patient outcomes in spinal fusion surgery, through the design and development of bone grafting materials, spinal implants and instrumentation, and enabling technologies. The output of this PhD program will be highly translatable to improving care of spinal fusion patients though improved surgical techniques and improved bone grafting products. Note, the Chief Scientific Officer of SeaSpine is UNSW PhD graduate who maintains strong ties to UNSW.
