Benefits

The purpose of these Scholarships is to assist Indigenous students experiencing financial hardship with the costs of studying, particularly students relocating from a remote or regional area to study at the University.

Requirements

To be eligible for these Scholarships, applicants must:

  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and state that he/she identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is recognised by his/her community as a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  1. Confirmation of Aboriginality must be provided by the applicant themselves, confirmation from parents or other family members will not be accepted.
  2. The confirmation must be signed by an authorised Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person or organisation or provided through a Statutory Declaration.
  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, VET, or pathways program at the University.
  • Demonstrate financial hardship.

To be eligible for the Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (ICECS):

  • Not be in receipt of any of the following:
    • Centrelink Student Start-Up Loan.
    • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Student Start-Up Scholarship.
    • A Commonwealth Scholarship awarded prior to 2017.

To be eligible for the Indigenous Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (ICAS):

  • Be from a regional or remote area – as determined by a permanent home address being classified as Inner Regional, Outer Regional, Remote or Very Remote in the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Edition 3; and
  • Not be in receipt of any of the following:
    • Centrelink Relocation Scholarship.
    • Centrelink ABSTUDY Residential Costs Option.

Interview Dates and Process

The Grant is awarded to the applicants who, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, best demonstrate through their application and supporting documentation:

  • Financial need;
  • Rural, regional, or remote background.
  • Preference will be given to commencing first year students.

Scholarships will be awarded in accordance with the ISSP Guidelines, based on financial need as calculated using the Needs Assessment Framework (Scholarships), with additional consideration given to the need to relocate from a remote or regional area in Australia to study.
