These scholarships were established from the estate of the first Professor of French, Professor Kelver Hartley, at the University of Newcastle to promote the study of French and to assist students in this endeavour. Funding is derived from the Hartley Bequest administered by the executors, the Perpetual Trustees.

Benefits

There are two scholarships available for Semester 2 2025.

The scholarship provides $7500 to assist with cost of exchange studies in France.

Requirements

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate degree or Diploma in Languages at the University of Newcastle.
  • Be enrolled in FREN3610 and/or FREN3701, and have previously completed FREN2620 or FREN3620 or equivalent.
  • Accepted as an exchange student for a semester at a French University with which University of Newcastle has a Memorandum of Understanding.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement by having a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 or higher in your current program.

Interview Dates and Process

Selection of the scholar will be on the basis of academic merit, including performance in French courses, and assessment of application and supporting documents against the eligibility criteria.

Application Documents

Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.

  • A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
  • A copy of your acceptance to study at a French speaking institution as part of an exchange program.
  • A copy of your overseas study credit approval from your College.
