This scholarship was established with a bequest from Sir John Michael Higgins, and is offered to students undertaking research in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry directly relating to the study and development of pastoral and agricultural industries.

Benefits

• Living allowance of $43,500 per year pro rata (2025 full-time study rate) for up to 2 years for students undertaking a Master by research degree or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a Doctoral degree. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.
• Relocation grant of $2,000 for students moving from States or Territories other than Victoria or $3,000 for students moving from outside Australia.

Requirements

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

• be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
• have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne
• intend to undertake research in the field of chemistry or biochemistry directly relating to the study and development of the pastoral and agricultural industries
• not have completed a research qualification at the same or higher level as the course for which a scholarship is sought

Interview Dates and Process

This scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and the purpose of the research. Eligible applicants are scored and ranked according to their academic achievement in their previous tertiary studies, their research potential in their field of study, and other factors relevant to the proposed research, such as professional experience and refereed publications.
