University of Melbourne China Scholarship Council - Visiting PhD Scholars Program 2025

The China Scholarship Council Visiting PhD Scholars program assists outstanding young Chinese scholars pursing doctoral degrees to engage in joint research training by visiting the University of Melbourne.

Benefits

The CSC will provide scholarship recipients with living expenses (including overseas health insurance) for 6-24 months based on the standards determined by the Chinese government, along with one round-trip international travel expense and visa application fee.

Requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • ­Meet the conditions stipulated in the "Guidelines for the Selection of Overseas Students Sponsored by the China Scholarship Council for the Current year"
  • Have a solid professional foundation, strong learning and research abilities, communication skills, excellent academic performance, outstanding work achievements, and strong potential for development
  • Be under 35 years old (at 1st January in the year of application)

Interview Dates and Process

In awarding the China Scholarship Council Visiting PhD Scholar program, the China Scholarship Council will consider applicants who:

  • Are outstanding full-time doctoral students from Chinese universities or research institutions who hold a Letter of Offer from the University of Melbourne at the time of application.
  • Meet one of the CSC English language requirements

January 31, 2026

How To Apply

There is a two-stage application process.

Before applying:

Find a Potential Hosting Supervisor (Recommended this to be done before December in the year prior to application)

  • Visit Find an Expert to find contact details for potential supervisors. When contacting them make sure to:
    • Explain your motivation for seeking to conduct a research project, as a CSC Visiting PhD Scholar, with them as your supervisor; and
    • Provide them with a research proposal for your visit.
  • Once you have a supervisor confirmed at the University of Melbourne, prepare the following supporting documents:

Stage  1: 

Apply to the University of Melbourne (application deadline is the end of January)

  • Submit application through Study Abroad Research program (SA-RES)
    • Indicate that you are seeking CSC Visiting PhD funding
    • Your home institute does not need to be a UniMelb partner
    • Select "no" if unsure about exchange nomination status

Stage  2:

Submit application to CSC (applications open in March)

  • Complete CSC's online application
  • Submit all required documentation:
    • Nomination letter from the University of Melbourne (received after successful SA-RES application)
    • Letter of support/invitation from UniMelb hosting supervisor
    • Nomination letter from your home institute OR (If applying from Melbourne) letter of support from the Chinese Consulate
    • Additional documents (as per CSC website requirements)

When will I know the outcome?

The CSC usually notifies applicants of the outcome at the end of June.  Visiting PhD scholars may commence their visit from June in the year of award, and admitted individuals will complete dispatch procedures according to the requirements of the China Scholarship Council and the University of Melbourne.
