Monash University Outstanding Pre-service Teacher of Japanese Scholarship 2025

The Outstanding Pre-Service Teacher of Japanese Scholarship aims to recognise and support a dedicated individual who demonstrates exceptional passion and commitment to becoming a teacher of Japanese. This scholarship is funded by the Monash Japanese Language Education Centre (MJLEC) and is awarded to a pre-service student teacher who is not only achieving academically but also exhibits a strong dedication to promoting Japanese language and culture.

The recipient of this scholarship must be committed to teaching Japanese as a career, demonstrating leadership qualities that extend beyond the classroom. They are expected to be proactive in their professional growth, showing an eagerness to engage with both the local and global Japanese teaching communities. This includes seeking out opportunities to collaborate with peers and staying informed on innovative teaching methods in language education.

In addition to their commitment to the Japanese language, they should be motivated by a desire to empower students and cultivate an environment where cross-cultural understanding and respect thrive.

  • $6,000 one-off payment.

Requirements

You must be one of the following:

  • An Australian citizen
  • A New Zealand citizen
  • Australian permanent resident
  • Australian humanitarian visa holder
  • An International student

You must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in Bachelor of Education & Master of Teaching in the Faculty of Education at a Monash Campus in Australia.
  • WAM 70+ (Current students).
  • Undertaking units EDF5155 & EDF5156.
  • Studying to become teachers of Japanese.

Interview Dates and Process

  • Awarded based on academic achievement.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential and commitment to give back to the community via Access Monash Mentoring program or other Monash leadership programs.

To retain this scholarship:

  • You must maintain a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60 each semester.

Application Deadline

August 29, 2025

How To Apply

  • Applications will be made directly to the faculty between 30 June 2025 - 29 August 2025.
  • You will be required to submit a 1000 word essay to [email protected] explaining why you wish to become a teacher of Japanese, what you will try to achieve as a teacher and how you plan to do this.
  • This scholarship cannot be deferred.
