La Trobe Holsworth Biomedical Research Centre Scholarships - Infection and Inflammation 2025

These prestigious scholarships are established by the Holsworth Biomedical Research Centre at La Trobe University Bendigo and will be awarded to outstanding applicants who are interested in exploring fundamental science research in the infection and inflammation area. Our goals are to develop new ways so that patients can fine tune the immune responses effectively to limit the undesirable effects of inflammation potentially by using novel dietary adjuncts or bacteriophage therapies.

As an applicant you should have an interest in applying molecular and cell biology techniques to resolve outstanding questions about connections between innate immune, adipose and neural systems including their physiological interactions and how these can be modified by various pharmacological agents and/or interfering with microbiomes.

Requirements

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

• meet the entrance requirements for the proposed course
• not be receiving another scholarship greater than 75 per cent of the stipend rate for the same purpose 

Interview Dates and Process

In selecting successful applicants, we prioritise applications from candidates who:

• will be enrolled full-time and undertaking their research at a La Trobe University campus
• have completed a Masters by Research or other significant body of research, such as an honours research thesis or lead authorship of a peer-reviewed publication, assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 75 or above 
• have a background in one or more of the following areas: cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, immunology, molecular biology or biotechnology
• will be fully based at La Trobe University, Bendigo campus

• Please note: As part of your application you are not required to identify a potential supervisor – Helen Irving is the designated supervisor for this project. 
• Applicants are requested to provide a CV and highlight their discipline specific skillsets.
• No research proposal is required as you will be working on one of three defined projects.
• Selected applicants will be shortlisted for an interview in person or online.
• The University will carefully review your application and consider you for this scholarship. The successful candidate will be made an offer for candidature and scholarship.
• You will be advised of an outcome in October 2025.
