JCU Dr Peter Crossman Scholarship 2026

The Peter Crossman Scholarship is established as a bursary to assist James Cook University students who reside at The John Flynn College. In 2026 a single scholarship is valued at $9,853.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide students from diverse backgrounds (who may not have the capacity to pay full college fees) with the opportunity to reside at The John Flynn College. Recipients must demonstrate academic excellence in their studies and a commitment to the wider community. Recipients are eligible to apply for the same scholarship in years two and three of their college residency.

Benefits

If you are the successful applicant of this scholarship you will receive up to $9,240 per year for up to 3 years. Payment will be made by crediting the recipient’s John Flynn College account. 50% of the scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s account at the beginning of study period 1 and the remainder will be credited to the recipient’s account at the beginning of study period 2.

Requirements

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship:

  • I am an Australian or New Zealand citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and
  • I am or will be enrolled full time (at least 9 credit points per semester) at James Cook University in my first year of enrolment in an undergraduate bachelor or diploma course as at the census date for study period 1 and 2; and
  • Have not previously completed a bachelor degree
  • I can demonstrate that my home is so far from James Cook University Townsville (Bebegu Yumba campus or City campus) that daily travel for full-time internal study is impracticable
  • I can demonstrate academic excellence in my previous studies
  • I can demonstrate educational, social and/or financial disadvantage
  • I can demonstrate contribution to the wider community, through activities such as community service and participation in academics, arts, music, culture or sports; and
  • I can demonstrate my ability to uphold the values of the College.

Selection Process

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation after it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Application Documents

  • A personal statement of no more than two pages addressing the eligibility criteria.
  • A copy of of a document to prove that you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa.
  • A character reference from a person other than a family member, demonstrating your contribution to the wider community and your ability to uphold the values of the College.
  • Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in assessing the merit of the application.
