This bursary has been established from the estate of the late David Hastings, supporting students with a physical disability or other impairment. This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

Benefits

  • The value of scholarship is $1,000 which will be paid in 1 instalment after census date of Study Period 1. Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.

Requirements

The David Hastings Bursary shall be open to competition among candidates who:

  • are domestic students, i.e. Australian or New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent visa;
  • are domiciled anywhere in that portion of the State of Queensland lying to the North of the twenty-second (22nd) degree of South Latitude;
  • have a physical disability or other impairment; and
  • are or will be enrolled full-time in the year the bursary is awarded.

Selection Process

The Selection Committee shall, in the exercise of its absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:

  • academic merit;
  • the character of the candidate for the award; and
  • any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate, including whether the candidate has, or will receive any other scholarship assistance during their studies.

The award of the bursary shall be made at the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, that shall comprise of:

  • The Chair of the Academic Board (CHAIR), or nominee,
  • Secretary of the University, or nominee and
  • Member of the Advancement Team, or nominee.
  • **OR a pool of appropriate JCU representatives

The Selection Committee reserves the right:

  • Not to award the bursary in any year;
  • To extend the bursary for an existing recipient; and
  • To award the bursary for a year or more than one year.

The Selection Committee to forward their recommendation to the Trustees of the estate of the late David Hastings. The Selection Committee may require applicants to undertake an interview as part of their application. The Selection Committee shall determine all matters relating to the Bursary.

Applications must be submitted on the official form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must attach to the official form:

  • A certified copy of their academic record from any other academic institution;
  • No more than three references attesting to the applicant's good character and/ or suitability to receive the bursary;
  • Their curriculum vitae;
  • A personal impact statement outlining how their disability has impacted on their lives and their ability to study; and
  • Proof of residence; and
  • Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion as to the merit of the application.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the suitability of the applicant to receive the bursary, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University, or any other academic institution.
