This scholarship has been funded by a generous donation from Mark Govier, whose passionate interest in the relationship between the Royal Society of London and the British Government inspired his master’s degree research at Flinders University. His M.A. thesis, ‘The Political Alignment of the Early Royal Society: 1662-1703’, revealed that a close relationship existed from the earliest days between the government and organised science in Britain.
To expand upon his research, which brought new information to light and many new questions to be explored, the Mark Govier PhD Scholarship will support innovative research into the relationship between the Royal Society of London and the British Government.
The purpose of the Mark Govier scholarship is to enable a suitably qualified graduate to carry out, under the supervision of a member of staff appointed by the College, a program of study leading to a Higher Degree by research. A stipend or top-up is monetary assistance provided by a supervisor or an organisation to supplement a scholarship.
