Macquarie University PhD Scholarship in AI Applications for Wound Care 2026

Wound care represents a significant healthcare challenge globally, with chronic wounds affecting millions of patients and placing substantial burden on healthcare systems. This scholarship supports research in artificial intelligence applications for wound care assessment, diagnosis and treatment monitoring, developed in partnership with MEDISA.

This research will explore how machine learning, computer vision and deep learning technologies can improve wound care outcomes through:

• automated assessment tools
• predictive analytics
• clinical decision support systems.

Potential research topics include:

• development of AI algorithms for automated wound classification and measurement
• computer vision systems for wound image analysis and tracking healing progression
• machine learning models for predicting wound healing outcomes
• integration of AI tools into clinical wound care workflows
• validation of AI-based wound assessment systems in clinical settings.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with clinical partners and MEDISA to translate research outcomes into practical applications that can benefit healthcare providers and patients.

Benefits

The scholarship comprises:

• a tuition fee offset/scholarship
• a living allowance stipend.

The value of each stipend scholarship is $39,700 per annum (full time, indexed) for three years.

Requirements

• This scholarship is available to eligible candidates to undertake a direct-entry three-year PhD program.
• Candidates with a background in biomedical engineering, or medicine and health are encouraged to apply.
