The Bilya Boorn Scholarship (Scholarship) supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students by providing recipients with financial assistance, mentoring and professional development opportunities in commercial law.

Benefits

The Scholarship will provide the following support for up to a maximum of 2 years (based on a full-time study load):

  • An annual value of $10,000, paid as a cash stipend of $5,000 per semester
  • Student networking and mentoring opportunities will be offered through the Aboriginal/indigenous students unit at the University attended by the student
  • Ad hoc professional networking and mentoring opportunities will be provided from time to time through the participating law firms

The amount can be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses.

Requirements

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the Scholarship:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander decent
  • Reside or intend to reside in Western Australia at the time of undertaking their studies 
  • Study at or intend to study at a Western Australian university
  • Be enrolled, or eligible to enrol in the equivalent of at least 2 full time units per semester.

The scholarship may be held concurrently with any other scholarship or award, provided that:

  • The applicant discloses any other scholarship, bursary or award of $5,000 or more that they currently hold; 
  • and that this is permitted by the conditions of the concurrent scholarship, bursary or award.

Selection Process

Criteria for selection is based on a consideration of the following: 

  • financial hardship and/or personal circumstances (such as but not limited to the types of matters set out in the TISC EAS guidelines);
  • satisfactory academic standing;
  • community engagement; and
  • other achievements or information the applicant may wish to provide.

Applicants are to provide information or documents addressing the selection criteria which may be in the form of a personal statement explaining how the Scholarship would support the applicant in their studies and career aspirations. 

Applicants are to provide information or documents addressing the eligibility criteria which show: 

  • evidence of enrolment or intention to enrol;
  • evidence of academic standing; and
  • confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status or proof from the relevant University that the Applicant has provided that University with confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status.

Scholarship will be awarded by Friday 27 March 2026.
